The Charity Guild of Catholic Women is a volunteer organization that operates a consignment and resale shop in the Montrose Area neighborhood. These women work tirelessly to accomplish their mission to support children’s charities throughout the Greater Houston area. Due to the pandemic, the Shop was closed for five months and re-opened in August 2020 with a limited schedule and personal protection measures in place. Nothing was going to stop these volunteers from raising money for Houston’s children, a tradition that dates back nearly 100 years! Customers were so excited to be back at “Houston’s best kept secret” once again. Despite the year’s challenges, the Charity Guild of Catholic Women is proud to award over $200,000 to 27 non-profit organizations benefiting Houston’s most vulnerable members.
Founded in 1922, The Charity Guild started its journey supporting what is now the San José Clinic. The Guild continues their support of this organization, but the impact has expanded in the Houston community as the resale shop has grown in size and reputation. The Children’s Charities Grant presentation reflects the significant partnership of volunteers, consignors, customers, and community. Since 1996, the Charity Guild of Catholic Women has donated more than $6.4 million to more than 160 non-profit organizations with proceeds from their volunteer run Charity Guild Shop.
The grants are used to support programs that provide food, healthcare, adequate clothing, educational support, restorative and mental health assistance, supportive recreation and enhancement services, and art enrichment to the most vulnerable in our community-our children.
“The Charity Guild has truly been an invaluable partner in our story and in our mission, as we strive to break the intergenerational cycle of homelessness and provide our young students with a brighter, more hopeful future,” says a representative from SEARCH House of Tiny Treasures, one of the Charity Guild’s grant recipients.
